President Droupadi Murmu Awarded Honorary Doctorate By Bucharest University

Murmu promotes stronger academic ties between India and Romania.

President Droupadi Murmu was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate by the Bucharest University of Economic Studies in Romania on Friday, recognizing her contributions to public service, education, and international cooperation. Addressing the university community during the ceremony, President Murmu expressed gratitude to the Rector, Senate, faculty members, and students, dedicating the honour to the people of India and describing it as a symbol of the enduring friendship between India and Romania.

Accepting the prestigious Doctor Honoris Causa, the university’s highest academic distinction, President Murmu said she received the recognition with humility on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians. She highlighted education as the most transformative force in her life and recalled her own journey from a small village background to becoming the President of India. She said her experiences showed that education is not only a path to personal progress but also the foundation of a fair and inclusive society.

Reflecting on her years as an educator, President Murmu emphasized that even a single classroom can transform the future of families and communities. She said education has the power to create opportunities and reduce inequalities by allowing individuals to rise beyond their circumstances. The President stressed that this belief has guided her throughout her years of public service and remains central to her vision of social development.

Addressing the impact of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital advancements, the President urged universities to ensure that knowledge is guided by ethics, wisdom, and compassion. She said educational institutions have a greater responsibility in shaping how new technologies are developed and used, ensuring that scientific progress benefits humanity.

Founded in 1913, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies is Romania’s leading institution for economics, business, and public administration education. The President encouraged students to remain curious, confident, and compassionate while using their knowledge to build bridges between cultures and contribute to a peaceful and prosperous world.
