Pope Leo Criticises Trump’s Remarks Ahead Of US-Iran Talks In Pakistan

Pope Leo criticises Trump’s war rhetoric ahead of US-Iran talks.

Pope Leo XIV has issued a sharp rebuke of war rhetoric linked to U.S. policy ahead of crucial Iran talks in Pakistan, indirectly targeting Donald Trump by rejecting the use of religious justification for conflict. In remarks delivered during recent engagements, the Pope emphasized that Christianity does not endorse violence, stating that the “Prince of Peace” — a reference to Jesus Christ — cannot be associated with war or bloodshed. He warned that invoking faith to justify military action distorts core religious teachings and risks legitimising violence.

While not always naming Trump directly, the pontiff’s comments come in response to repeated references by U.S. leaders framing the Iran conflict in religious terms. Pope Leo stressed that “God does not bless any conflict,” calling ongoing violence “absurd and inhuman” and urging leaders to abandon rhetoric that portrays war as morally justified.

The remarks coincide with high-stakes negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, where delegations are attempting to build on a fragile ceasefire following weeks of escalating conflict. The talks, mediated by Pakistan, are widely seen as a critical opportunity to de-escalate tensions in the region.

Trump, however, has maintained a hardline stance ahead of the negotiations, warning of potential military action if Iran fails to meet U.S. demands. His comments, including threats tied to strategic routes like the Strait of Hormuz, have added pressure to the already delicate diplomatic process.

The Pope’s intervention reflects growing concern within the Vatican over the moral framing of modern conflicts, particularly when religious language is used in political discourse. He has consistently called for dialogue over force, urging global leaders to pursue peace through negotiation rather than escalation.

The exchange highlights a broader ideological divide, with the Vatican advocating for restraint and humanitarian principles, while political leaders involved in the conflict continue to weigh military and strategic considerations. As talks unfold in Pakistan, the Pope’s message adds a moral dimension to an already complex geopolitical standoff.
