PoK Violence Leaves 20 Dead Amid JAAC Demand for Reforms

Death toll from violent clashes between police and JAAC protesters in PoK has risen to 20.

The death toll from ongoing clashes between police and protesters linked to the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has risen to 20, according to an AFP report based on official figures. The unrest has continued despite a ban imposed on the movement under anti-terrorism laws last week, as supporters persist with demonstrations demanding economic and governance reforms in the region.

According to initial official statements, at least seven people were killed earlier in the week, including both civilians and police personnel, with dozens more injured during violent confrontations. Authorities later revised the toll upwards, with new figures confirming a sharp rise in fatalities as clashes continued across multiple districts. Officials say the situation remains tense as security forces attempt to restore order.

Local administration officials provided differing accounts of the casualties. Malik Zafar, the higher education minister in the PoK government, told AFP that seven people were killed in his constituency of Kotli during recent clashes. Meanwhile, Sardar Waheed, the top civilian official in Rawalakot, stated that a total of 12 deaths had been recorded in that area, including four police officers. These discrepancies reflect the evolving and fragmented nature of information coming from the conflict zones.

Police officials also reported additional fatalities in other parts of the region. Khurram Iqbal, a senior police officer in Mirpur, confirmed that one protester had died during confrontations with security personnel on Wednesday. With incidents reported across multiple cities, authorities say the violence has spread beyond isolated protests, raising concerns about further escalation in the coming days.

The protests, led by JAAC supporters, have continued despite heavy restrictions and enforcement actions. The group, which has been demanding reforms related to governance and economic conditions, was recently banned under anti-terrorism legislation. However, demonstrations have persisted, with supporters maintaining strikes and protest activities across several areas of PoK.

In Muzaffarabad, the main city of the region, widespread shutdowns have been observed as many shops closed in support of JAAC’s strike call. Mobile internet services have also been largely disrupted, limiting communication for residents. With tensions remaining high and casualty figures still being updated, authorities and observers warn that the situation could continue to deteriorate unless dialogue or de-escalation measures are introduced.
