Iran Condemns US Strikes On Merchant Vessels Carrying Indian Crew Members
Iran condemns US strikes on vessels carrying Indian crew.
Iran has strongly criticised the United States over recent attacks on commercial vessels off the coast of Oman that reportedly involved Indian crew members, describing the actions as “state piracy” and a threat to global maritime security. The remarks were made by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei, who accused the US of endangering international navigation and escalating tensions in strategic shipping lanes. He urged the international community to hold Washington accountable, stating that such actions undermine global peace and security.
Baqaei said the incidents amounted to what he called “armed robbery and state piracy,” asserting that they reflected a broader pattern of US behaviour in international waters. He argued that such operations threaten the freedom of navigation, a principle widely considered essential to global trade and maritime law. The controversy stems from multiple reported attacks on merchant vessels operating near Oman, some of which had Indian crew members on board. According to reports, three ships were targeted in the region this week, resulting in the deaths of three Indian seafarers in one of the incidents. The developments have triggered diplomatic concern in India and abroad.
Iran’s spokesperson also extended condolences to the families of the deceased Indian sailors and expressed sympathy to the Indian government. The statement added an unusual diplomatic note of solidarity with the victims despite the broader geopolitical tensions between the countries involved. In response to the incidents, India has raised the matter directly with the United States. New Delhi summoned the US chargé d’affaires in India and conveyed that the reported strikes on commercial vessels were “unacceptable” and deeply concerning, particularly given the involvement of Indian nationals among the crew.

Indian authorities have described the situation as serious and are seeking further clarification from Washington over the nature and justification of the operations. The issue has added another layer of tension to already sensitive maritime security dynamics in the region. As investigations and diplomatic exchanges continue, the incidents are expected to remain a focal point of international concern, particularly due to their implications for shipping safety, regional stability, and the protection of civilian maritime traffic in one of the world’s busiest sea routes.
