PM Modi’s “Chaiwala Came To You” Remark at Rome Event Goes Viral Online
PM Modi’s “chaiwala” remark at Rome event goes viral on social media.
Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi drew attention at an event in Rome after referring to himself as a “chaiwala” (tea seller) during a speech at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) headquarters, a remark that quickly went viral on social media for its humour and symbolism.
Addressing delegates ahead of International Tea Day celebrations, PM Modi highlighted India’s long-standing tea culture and global reach. In a light-hearted moment, he said that a “chaiwala” had arrived a day early to mark the occasion, prompting laughter and applause from the audience. The comment referenced his early life selling tea before entering public service, a narrative he has frequently invoked in international forums.
The event was part of PM Modi’s official visit to Italy, where he also held bilateral discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The two leaders reportedly reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation, with relations between India and Italy being elevated to a special strategic partnership, signalling deeper engagement across sectors including trade, defence, and technology.

During the FAO event, PM Modi was also conferred with the Agricola Medal for 2026, an honour recognising contributions to food security and agricultural development. He described the award as a collective recognition of India’s farmers, livestock rearers, fishermen, agricultural scientists, and workers, emphasising the country’s broader commitment to sustainable development and global food systems.
In his remarks, PM Modi thanked the FAO leadership and reiterated India’s focus on human welfare and agricultural resilience. He stated that the honour represented not just an individual achievement but a reflection of India’s efforts in strengthening food security and supporting livelihoods across rural sectors.
The Rome visit was part of a wider five-nation diplomatic tour that included stops in the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. During the tour, PM Modi also received several international honours, including Sweden’s Royal Order of the Polar Star and Norway’s Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, underscoring expanding diplomatic engagement between India and Europe.
