PM Modi to Launch North India's First Semiconductor Plant and Meerut Metro Next Week
PM Modi to inaugurate semiconductor unit in Gautam Buddh Nagar and Namo Bharat corridor.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of North India’s first semiconductor manufacturing unit in Gautam Buddh Nagar next week and inaugurate key transport projects in Uttar Pradesh. The announcements were made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the Budget Session in the state Legislative Council. The twin events are being projected as major milestones in the state’s infrastructure and technology push. Officials said the initiatives aim to boost high-tech manufacturing and regional connectivity. The visits are scheduled for February 21 and 22.
According to the chief minister, the semiconductor facility in Gautam Buddh Nagar will mark a significant step toward positioning Uttar Pradesh as a hub for advanced electronics manufacturing. The project is expected to strengthen India’s domestic chip ecosystem and attract further investments. Adityanath said the state already enjoys strong connectivity across air, road and waterways. He emphasised that the new unit would enhance the region’s industrial profile. The foundation ceremony is slated for February 21.
On February 22, the prime minister will inaugurate the remaining sections of the 82 km Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, connecting Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut. Alongside, the 23-km Meerut Metro corridor with 13 stations will also be launched. Officials said the pending portions include a 5-km stretch in Delhi and a 21-km segment from Meerut South to Modipuram. The corridor is designed to link major residential and industrial clusters. Authorities expect the project to significantly cut travel time.

Highlighting improvements since 2017, Adityanath said travel between Delhi and Meerut, which earlier took around three hours, can now be completed in about 45 minutes via motorways. He added that the rapid rail system will further streamline commuting. The chief minister also pointed to major gains in law and order and infrastructure expansion. Uttar Pradesh now accounts for about 55% of the country’s motorway network, he said. The state currently has 22 motorways in various stages of development.
Adityanath further noted progress in aviation and waterways, citing upgrades along the Varanasi–Haldia route and expansion of airport infrastructure. He said Uttar Pradesh now has 16 airports, including four international ones, with the fifth at Jewar nearing readiness. A major maintenance, repair and overhaul hub is also being developed there. The chief minister described the projects as evidence of the state’s emergence as a logistics and connectivity hub. The prime minister’s visit is expected to spotlight these developments.
