PM Modi Meets Iranian President In Kyrgyzstan: Why The Meeting Matters

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The meeting comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia and marks the first in-person interaction between the two leaders since the war involving Iran began in February. They reviewed the status of India-Iran relations and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that the two sides emphasised the need to expand joint cooperation across areas important to both countries. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and other senior Iranian officials were present during the meeting. The discussions assume significance as India seeks to maintain engagement with Tehran while navigating a wider geopolitical situation involving Iran, the United States and other regional powers.

The meeting also comes against the backdrop of disruptions affecting regional trade and connectivity. India has traditionally maintained important economic and strategic ties with Iran, but sanctions against Tehran and instability around the Strait of Hormuz have created challenges for commercial activity. The two countries have also cooperated on connectivity initiatives, making regional stability important for their broader economic and strategic interests.

Modi and Pezeshkian had previously spoken by telephone in June, when the Iranian president briefed the Indian prime minister on developments in West Asia. Modi welcomed the understanding reached to end the conflict at the time and stressed the importance of continued efforts towards lasting peace and stability. The two leaders had also spoken on March 21, when they discussed the security situation in the region in detail.

Pezeshkian has maintained that Iran does not seek war while also warning that the country would respond to aggression. Ahead of the SCO engagement, he stressed the importance of regional cooperation and argued that instability was harmful to countries across the region. Against this backdrop, the Modi-Pezeshkian meeting provides an opportunity for both sides to discuss regional developments while keeping bilateral cooperation on the agenda.

Modi also met Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during the SCO gathering, with discussions covering defence, economic cooperation, pharmaceuticals, science and technology, culture and education. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the situation in West Asia. Modi is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, adding further significance to India's diplomatic engagements in Bishkek.
