Xi Jinping Heads To Kyrgyzstan And Egypt For Key Diplomatic Visits

Xi Jinping will visit Kyrgyzstan and Egypt from Sunday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Kyrgyzstan and Egypt from Sunday as Beijing seeks to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with both countries. The visit, announced by China's foreign ministry on Wednesday, will include Xi's participation in a regional summit in Bishkek and state-level talks in Egypt.

In Kyrgyzstan, Xi will attend a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), bringing together leaders from member countries including Russia and Iran. He is also scheduled to meet Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation and promoting what Beijing described as mutually beneficial and high-quality development.

Xi will then travel to Egypt for talks with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. China's foreign ministry said the discussions are expected to focus on contributing to peace and stability in the region, while Egypt's presidency said the two leaders will examine ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries across areas of mutual interest.

The Egyptian and Chinese leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and international developments. Xi's visit comes amid continuing tensions involving Iran and the United States, which have affected security and shipping across the Middle East and disrupted international energy markets.

China maintains significant economic interests in the Middle East, including extensive energy ties with the region. The developments around the Strait of Hormuz have therefore added wider significance to Beijing's diplomatic engagement with countries in the region, particularly as disruptions to oil shipments can affect global markets.

The visit to Egypt will be Xi's first in 10 years and, according to China's foreign ministry, carries particular significance for the development of bilateral relations. His tour will continue until September 3 and will mark his second overseas trip of the year, following his visit to North Korea in June.
