PM Modi Congratulates Sanae Takaichi on Japan's Landmark Election Win
India and Japan aim to strengthen their strategic partnership as Takaichi secures a landmark parliamentary majority.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on her decisive victory in the elections to Japan’s House of Representatives. In a post on X, PM Modi described the win as “landmark” and emphasized that the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership remains a key driver of global peace, stability, and prosperity.
Takaichi’s coalition achieved a historic result, winning 316 of the 465 seats in Japan’s lower house for her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)—the party’s best-ever performance. With coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party (Ishin), Takaichi now controls 352 seats, giving her a supermajority that allows for smooth passage of key legislation, even in areas where she lacks upper-house dominance.
As Japan’s first female leader inspired by Britain’s “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher, Takaichi has pledged significant policy measures, including tax cuts and increased military spending aimed at countering China’s growing regional influence. Her sweeping mandate provides the legislative muscle to implement these ambitious reforms without substantial opposition roadblocks.

PM Modi’s congratulatory message underscored confidence in Takaichi’s leadership and expressed optimism that India-Japan relations would continue to deepen. The two nations have shared a long-standing partnership in trade, technology, defence, and strategic coordination across the Indo-Pacific region.
Analysts note that Takaichi’s supermajority strengthens Japan’s policy continuity and international standing, offering stability in global markets and regional security. Her government is expected to prioritize economic reforms while maintaining a robust foreign policy approach, particularly in collaboration with key partners like India.
With this victory, both India and Japan are poised to explore new avenues of cooperation in infrastructure, technology, and defence, leveraging their strategic and economic alignment to address regional and global challenges in the coming years.
