PM Modi Condoles Norway King Harald V’s Death, Recalls His Service

King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express his condolences to the Norwegian Royal Family and the people of Norway. Harald V, who was among Europe’s oldest reigning monarchs, had served as Norway’s king since 1991.

Modi recalled meeting King Harald V during his visit to Norway earlier this year. In a post on X, the Prime Minister expressed deep sadness over the monarch’s death and remembered him for his warmth and profound sense of service to his nation.

Modi extended his heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family and the Norwegian people. His tribute highlighted the personal impression made by Harald V during their recent meeting and reflected the close diplomatic ties between India and Norway.

King Harald V had a childhood marked by the Second World War. During the Nazi occupation of Norway, he went into exile with his family and spent part of his childhood in the United States before eventually returning to his homeland.

During his long reign, Harald V played a role in modernising the Norwegian royal house while maintaining its traditional responsibilities. He also remained on the throne despite his advancing age, choosing not to follow the path of several other European monarchs who have abdicated in recent years.

Following his death, his son automatically succeeds him as king. The transition marks a significant moment for Norway’s monarchy and brings an end to Harald V’s decades-long reign, during which he became a well-known and popular figure in the country.
