Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon Becomes New King Following Death Of Father Harald V At 89

Norway's King Harald V, Europe's oldest reigning monarch, died on Friday at the age of 89, bringing an end to a reign of more than three decades marked by modernization of the royal family, national unity and a close connection with the Norwegian public. The Royal Palace confirmed that Harald died at Rikshospitalet in Oslo at 6:35 am local time. His death was also confirmed by Norway's armed forces. Harald became king in January 1991 after the death of his father, King Olav V. During his reign, he maintained the Norwegian monarchy's largely ceremonial role while adapting the institution to changing social attitudes. He became particularly known for his emphasis on openness, diversity and democratic values, while continuing the royal family's tradition of representing Norway at home and abroad.

His life was shaped by the Second World War. Harald was only three when Nazi Germany invaded Norway in 1940. He fled the country with his mother, Crown Princess Märtha, and his sisters, eventually spending part of his childhood in the United States. His father, Crown Prince Olav, and grandfather, King Haakon VII, went into exile in Britain with the Norwegian government. The royal family returned to Norway in 1945 after the war. Harald also broke with royal tradition in his personal life. He married Sonja Haraldsen, his school sweetheart and the daughter of a businessman, after years of resistance to expectations that he should marry a European royal. The couple eventually received permission from King Olav and married in 1968. Their decision was initially controversial but later helped reinforce Harald's image as a modern monarch willing to place personal choice above convention.

A keen sailor, Harald represented Norway at three Olympic Games and carried his sporting interests into his royal life. As king, he became a prominent symbol of national unity, particularly during periods of crisis. His response to the 2011 terrorist attacks, when he spoke in support of democracy, freedom and an inclusive Norway, was widely remembered as one of the defining moments of his reign. Harald's death now begins a new chapter for Norway's monarchy. His only son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically became king immediately after his father's death and is expected to reign as King Haakon VIII. The 53-year-old new monarch has been preparing for the role for decades and has regularly represented his father at official events.

Haakon's accession comes as the Norwegian royal family faces increased public scrutiny. His wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has faced controversy over her past contact with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, while her son Marius Borg Høiby, who has no royal title or official duties, has faced serious criminal proceedings. These issues are expected to form part of the broader challenges confronting the new king. Under Norway's constitutional system, there is no formal coronation. Haakon is expected to formally confirm his royal name at an extraordinary Council of State and swear an oath before parliament. A later consecration ceremony may be held at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, but the transfer of the throne itself took effect immediately when Harald died.

Norway has entered a period of national mourning following the death of a monarch who remained on the throne for more than 35 years. Flags have been lowered and tributes have begun to emerge from across the country. Harald's reign was defined by a gradual modernization of the monarchy while preserving its traditional constitutional role, and his death marks the end of an era for Norway's royal family. With Haakon now king, attention will turn to how he carries forward his father's legacy while navigating a changing Norwegian society and renewed scrutiny of the royal household. His succession is automatic, but the new reign begins at a moment when the institution will be expected to maintain the public trust and broad popularity that Harald worked for throughout his decades as monarch.
