Philippines Earthquake: Residents Flee in Panic as Buildings Collapse and Tsunami Alerts Follow

A powerful quake struck the Philippines, triggering tsunami alerts across the region.

A powerful earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, triggering panic among residents, causing structural damage, and prompting tsunami warnings across parts of the Philippines and neighboring Indonesia. Videos circulating on social media showed scenes of chaos as people rushed out of buildings, screams echoed through crowded areas, and several structures appeared to collapse following the strong tremors. Authorities immediately began assessing the extent of damage and monitoring the situation for potential casualties.

The earthquake was initially measured at magnitude 8.2 by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) before being revised to 7.8. According to the agency, the quake occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers, increasing the likelihood of strong ground shaking near the epicenter. The United States Tsunami Warning System also issued alerts warning of possible tsunami waves, prompting precautionary measures in vulnerable coastal communities.

In Sarangani Province, local officials reported minor damage to public infrastructure. Alabel town police chief Benjie Ancheta said the local police station developed cracks during the quake and described the event as the strongest earthquake experienced in the area in recent years. Emergency response teams were deployed to inspect buildings and ensure public safety as aftershocks remained a concern.

Reports from General Santos City, located near the affected region, indicated that household items, furniture, televisions, and appliances were damaged as residents scrambled to protect themselves during the shaking. Several videos shared online appeared to show students being evacuated from a heavily damaged school building, while other footage captured frightened residents gathering in open spaces away from structures.

One of the most widely shared clips showed what appeared to be the collapse of a Jollibee building in General Santos City. Another video recorded by bystanders captured a separate building collapsing as onlookers watched in shock. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the incidents resulted in injuries or fatalities, and official damage assessments remain ongoing.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said government agencies were coordinating disaster response efforts and closely monitoring developments. The Philippines, like neighboring Indonesia, lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active regions. The area experiences frequent earthquakes due to intense tectonic activity, making preparedness and rapid emergency response critical whenever major seismic events occur.
