Pope Leo XIV Champions Traditional Family, Dignity of Unborn in First Address
Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, declared Friday that the family is rooted in the “stable union between a man and a woman” and affirmed the inherent dignity of the unborn and elderly as God’s creations.
Speaking to the Vatican diplomatic corps, he reiterated Catholic teachings on marriage and abortion, setting a clear tone for his pontificate ahead of his installation Mass on Sunday.
In his first formal engagement since the conclave, Leo, an Augustinian, also urged a revival of multilateral diplomacy and interreligious dialogue to foster global peace.
