Passengers Face Scare As Beijing-Manchester Flight Makes Emergency Landing In Russia

A Hainan Airlines flight carrying more than 230 passengers from Beijing to Manchester made an emergency landing at Krasnoyarsk International Airport in Russia after developing a mechanical fault while flying over Siberia, officials and the airline said. Hainan Airlines Flight HU753 departed from Beijing on August 15, 2026, and was headed for Manchester Airport in the United Kingdom. Around four hours into the journey, sensors on the Airbus A330-300 detected a technical problem while the aircraft was travelling over Siberia.

Following the alert, the flight crew issued an emergency signal and diverted the aircraft towards Krasnoyarsk. The aircraft landed safely at Krasnoyarsk International Airport at 6:28 am local time, according to the information provided by Russian authorities. Emergency response teams were deployed around the runway as a precaution before and during the aircraft's arrival. The Russian Emergencies Ministry said there were no reported injuries or deaths in the incident.

Authorities also confirmed that neither the aircraft nor airport ground facilities were damaged during the emergency landing. The safe landing allowed passengers and crew to disembark or remain under airport supervision while arrangements were made for the continuation of their journey. The precise nature of the mechanical fault was not immediately disclosed by the airline. Hainan Airlines confirmed that Flight HU753 had been diverted because of a mechanical fault and apologised to passengers for the disruption. In a statement, the airline said it planned to provide a replacement aircraft to operate the onward journey from Krasnoyarsk to Manchester.

The carrier also said it would arrange passenger support while ensuring that travellers could safely reach their final destination. The airline said the flight had landed safely at 7:28 am Beijing time, which corresponds to the early morning landing reported in Russia. Hainan Airlines reiterated that safety remained its priority and said it followed a policy focused on passenger safety and service. The carrier did not provide a detailed timeline for the replacement aircraft or specify when the passengers would resume their journey. The incident occurred as the aircraft was making its scheduled international journey across Russia's vast Siberian region.

Long-haul flights between East Asia and Europe frequently cross Russian airspace, making diversion airports such as Krasnoyarsk important contingency points when aircraft encounter problems during flight. In this case, the crew chose to divert after the mechanical warning rather than continue towards the United Kingdom. No casualties or damage were reported following the emergency landing. The airline is now expected to complete arrangements for the passengers' onward travel using another aircraft.
