“Nobody Can Outdo Us In Violence”: Bangladesh Students’ Party Warns Government

Political tensions intensify after violent confrontation in Jhenaidah.

Fresh political tensions erupted in Bangladesh after leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP), the student-backed political group that emerged from the 2024 anti-government protests, issued sharp warnings to the ruling establishment following violent clashes involving party supporters in Jhenaidah. The confrontation reportedly began after an egg was thrown at NCP chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary during a public event in the town. The incident quickly escalated into street clashes between supporters of the NCP and activists linked to the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), prompting police deployment in the area to restore order.

The controversy intensified after NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain made a strongly worded statement warning the government against political confrontation. Referring to the 2024 uprising that forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office, Asif Mahmud said the student movement had already demonstrated its ability to mobilize large-scale resistance. He stated that if violence became a political tool, “nobody can outdo us in that regard,” remarks that have since triggered criticism from political observers and rival parties concerned about rising political hostility in the country.

The National Citizen Party was formed in the aftermath of the nationwide student-led protests in 2024, which erupted amid widespread dissatisfaction over government policies and allegations surrounding democratic backsliding. The movement ultimately led to the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina-led administration and the installation of an interim government under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. During the interim period, Bangladesh witnessed significant political instability, with repeated street demonstrations, unrest, and allegations of attacks targeting minority communities, particularly Hindus, in different parts of the country.

Bangladesh later held national elections aimed at restoring democratic governance through a fresh public mandate. The elections resulted in victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party led by Tarique Rahman, who assumed office as Prime Minister. Although the transition was seen by many as a return to constitutional politics after months of uncertainty, tensions between the BNP and the National Citizen Party have persisted. Political analysts note that relations between the two sides have remained strained, with accusations that sections of the NCP have struggled to accept their electoral defeat despite advocating for democratic reforms during the uprising.

In his latest remarks, Asif Mahmud also invoked comparisons with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, cautioning the current leadership against repeating what he described as political mistakes made by the previous administration. He argued that any attempt to suppress the younger generation politically could provoke renewed resistance across the country. His comments have fueled debate within Bangladesh’s political circles, with critics accusing the NCP leadership of using inflammatory rhetoric that could deepen polarization at a sensitive stage in the country’s democratic transition.

Local authorities in Jhenaidah said police forces were deployed immediately after the clashes to prevent further violence and maintain public order. No major casualties were officially confirmed at the time of reporting, though tensions reportedly remained high in parts of the town. The latest confrontation highlights the fragile political environment in Bangladesh as rival groups continue to compete for influence in the post-uprising era, raising concerns about whether the country’s newly restored democratic process can remain stable amid escalating political rhetoric and recurring street-level confrontations.
