Nine Dead, 11 Missing After Heavy Rain Triggers Floods In China’s Chongqing

Heavy rain triggers deadly floods and rescue operations across parts of China.

At least nine people were killed and 11 others remained missing on Monday after torrential rain triggered flash floods and geological disasters in Yongchuan District of southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality. Local authorities said the extreme rainfall began late Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning, causing widespread destruction in several parts of the district and prompting large-scale rescue and relief operations.

Officials stated that sudden rainstorms led to overflowing rivers, landslides, and flooding in low-lying areas, severely affecting transportation and communication infrastructure. Emergency teams, including firefighters, police personnel, and disaster response units, were deployed across the affected zones to search for missing individuals and assist stranded residents. Authorities said rescue operations were continuing despite difficult weather and terrain conditions.

The heavy rainfall in Chongqing was part of a broader wave of severe weather impacting southern and central China in recent days. In Hunan Province, the death toll from continuous downpours in Shimen County rose to seven, while 14 people were reported missing. Local authorities said the torrential rain, which began early Sunday morning, affected at least 23 townships and districts under the administration of Changde City, leading to widespread flooding and infrastructure damage.

Officials in Hunan reported significant property losses and disruptions to daily life as floodwaters inundated residential areas, roads, and agricultural land. Rescue personnel have been working to evacuate residents from vulnerable areas while restoring essential services. Authorities described the rainfall as the first major round of torrential rain to hit the county this year, raising concerns over further flooding risks during the ongoing rainy season.

Meanwhile, in Guizhou Province, local authorities confirmed that four people had died and five others remained missing after severe flooding and landslides struck Guiding County last week. Search and rescue teams continue to operate in affected areas as officials assess the extent of the damage. Authorities noted that additional missing persons were identified following expanded investigations into the disaster-hit regions.

In response to the escalating weather emergency, China’s national commission for disaster prevention, reduction and relief activated a Level-IV emergency response for Guizhou Province earlier this month. The Ministry of Emergency Management stated that heavy rainfall and flood-related disasters have intensified across southern and central China, prompting heightened monitoring and emergency preparedness measures as authorities brace for further severe weather conditions.
