IMD Forecasts Heavy Rain In Five Tamil Nadu Districts, Wet Spell To Persist

IMD forecasts heavy rain in five Tamil Nadu districts with wet spell expected to continue.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for five districts in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, warning of an extended wet spell that is likely to continue across the state and neighbouring Puducherry for at least a week. Weather officials said the system is being driven by a trough extending from the southeast Arabian Sea to the central Bay of Bengal, which is intensifying rainfall activity over southern India.

The department has specifically forecast heavy rainfall in the hilly and adjoining regions of Coimbatore district, along with Nilgiris, Theni, Erode, and Dindigul. These areas are expected to receive intense showers, particularly in elevated terrain where rainfall impact is usually stronger. Authorities have warned that vulnerable locations may experience waterlogging, localised flooding, and disruptions to road traffic due to continuous downpours and reduced visibility.

In the Nilgiris district, which is frequently affected during active monsoon-like conditions, officials anticipate significant rainfall that could trigger landslides in steep and unstable zones. Similar risks have been flagged for parts of Coimbatore, Theni, and Dindigul, where intermittent heavy spells may disrupt daily life. Disaster management teams have advised residents in low-lying and hillside areas to remain cautious and follow local safety instructions.

The weather system is also expected to intensify on Friday, with strong rain and gusty winds likely across several additional districts, including Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, and Tiruchy. Forecasts also indicate similar conditions in Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Erode, and Nilgiris, suggesting widespread rainfall activity across interior and northern parts of Tamil Nadu. Officials said the atmospheric system remains active and is likely to sustain unsettled weather conditions over the coming days.

While the rainfall may bring temporary relief from the intense summer heat in several interior districts, authorities cautioned that sudden bursts of heavy rain and strong winds could still cause disruptions. Meanwhile, Chennai is expected to remain hot and humid despite surrounding weather activity, with maximum temperatures likely to hover around 40 degrees Celsius. Officials have urged the public to stay updated with forecasts and exercise caution, particularly in districts under heavy rain warnings.
