Nepal Supreme Court Says Judicial Records Nearly Lost In Student Protests

Court vows to restore operations after violent protests damaged historic judicial documents.

Nepal's Supreme Court has revealed that vital documents central to the nation's judicial history were on the brink of destruction during recent student-led anti-government protests. Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut, in a statement issued Thursday, expressed deep concern over the arson, vandalism, and looting that damaged court buildings amid the unrest. Despite the setbacks, Raut affirmed the court's commitment to delivering justice, pledging to resume operations swiftly to meet public expectations. He also conveyed condolences for the lives lost and wished a quick recovery to the injured.

The protests, which erupted earlier this week, resulted in at least 51 fatalities, including one Indian national, according to Nepal Police data. The violence targeted key institutions, with demonstrators setting fire to Parliament, the President's Office, the Prime Minister's residence, and various government and political party buildings. The Supreme Court highlighted the severe impact on judicial infrastructure, underscoring the broader chaos that gripped the Himalayan nation.

The agitation began as a response to a government-imposed ban on social media, which was lifted Monday night. However, it rapidly escalated into a widespread movement against corruption and political indifference, fueled by the youth-led "Gen-Z" campaign. The protests reflected deep-seated frustrations with the ruling class, leading to intense clashes and widespread property damage across Kathmandu and beyond.

The turmoil culminated in the ousting of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli's government on Tuesday. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in Friday as Nepal's first female prime minister to lead an interim administration, aiming to restore stability amid ongoing political uncertainty. The events mark a pivotal moment in Nepal's democratic journey, highlighting demands for accountability and reform.
