Nepal PM Balendra Shah Discusses Historic India Ties During Meeting With Indian Envoy

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah on Monday met Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava for their first one-on-one meeting, with the two sides discussing ways to strengthen relations between the neighbouring countries. The meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Singha Durbar in Kathmandu and covered Nepal-India bilateral ties, mutual interests, development partnership and areas of cooperation. Shah emphasised the importance of further strengthening Nepal’s “historic relationship” with India, according to his secretariat.

The meeting comes as Kathmandu and New Delhi continue to maintain extensive engagement across several areas, including development, connectivity, trade and other shared interests. Nepal and India have traditionally maintained close people-to-people, cultural and economic links, with high-level diplomatic meetings providing an avenue to discuss areas where both countries can expand cooperation.

Shah’s meeting with Srivastava focused on maintaining that engagement and identifying areas where the two sides can work more closely. India and Nepal have longstanding cooperation in sectors including trade, energy, infrastructure, connectivity and development assistance.

The two countries also share an open border and extensive social and cultural ties, making bilateral relations particularly significant for both governments. For Shah's government, the meeting offered an opportunity to underline Nepal’s interest in maintaining constructive relations with India while pursuing cooperation based on mutual interests. The prime minister’s emphasis on the “historic relationship” indicates the importance his government places on longstanding ties with New Delhi.
