4.2 Magnitude Quake Hits Uttarkashi District In Uttarakhand

An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 jolted parts of Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district in the early hours of Monday, prompting residents in several areas to move out of their buildings as tremors were felt across the Yamuna valley. Officials reported that there were no casualties or major damage following the earthquake.

According to a report issued by the District Emergency Operation Centre in Uttarkashi, the earthquake occurred at around 1:21 am. The epicentre was located near the Rajgarhi area of Barkot tehsil, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres.

Tremors were felt across several areas, including Uttarkashi, Barkot, Purola, Mori, Chinyalisaur and Dunda. Residents in some locations rushed out of their buildings after experiencing the shaking, with officials monitoring the situation across the affected areas.

Authorities gathered information from tehsildars, police station and outpost in-charges, revenue sub-inspectors and village heads to assess the impact of the earthquake. The information collected from different parts of the district did not indicate any major structural damage or other significant disruption.

Officials said there had been no reports of casualties so far. They also reported that no major damage had been identified in the areas where tremors were felt, although local authorities continued to monitor conditions following the earthquake.

The tremors come in a region that experiences seismic activity, making monitoring and rapid assessment important after earthquakes. Authorities are continuing to collect information from local officials and communities to determine whether any damage has occurred in remote or less accessible areas of Uttarkashi district.
