Nepal Flood Toll Nears 900 as UP Recovers 13 More Bodies From Gandak River

Thirteen bodies have been recovered from the Narayani-Gandak river system in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, after devastating floods in Nepal sent victims downstream into India. Officials said the recovered remains include six men and seven women. District authorities and State Disaster Response Force teams are monitoring the river and retrieving bodies as they are spotted, while animal carcasses have also been found floating downstream.

The bodies are being preserved while authorities work to establish their identities. Six of the 13 bodies recovered in Kushinagar have been kept in deep freezers at the mortuary of Kushinagar Medical College, while seven have been transferred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Gorakhpur. Officials said post-mortem examinations and other required procedures will be completed before the remains are handed over to the Nepal administration.

The Kushinagar district administration is coordinating with Nepal through the Ministry of External Affairs to share information about the recovered bodies. Officials said the process is aimed at helping identify the victims and reunite their remains with their families. Authorities are following established procedures for preserving the bodies and collecting information that could assist in matching them with people reported missing in Nepal.

A similar recovery operation has been carried out in neighbouring Maharajganj district. Four unidentified bodies recovered from the Narayani-Gandak river system were handed over to the Nepal administration after post-mortem examinations. The bodies of three women and a man had been recovered and kept at the Maharajganj district hospital mortuary after authorities were unable to establish their identities.

DNA samples were collected from all four bodies during the post-mortem process and will be shared with Nepalese authorities to support identification efforts. Officials said the handover took place after the necessary legal and administrative formalities were completed. The information could help authorities compare the samples with those of families searching for relatives missing after the floods and landslides.

The recoveries have prompted heightened monitoring along river systems connected to Nepal. Maharajganj, which shares a border with Nepal, had earlier issued a high alert and authorities have continued watching river levels and water bodies receiving water from the neighbouring country. Strong currents have carried debris and human remains downstream into Uttar Pradesh as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of severe flooding and landslides.
