Nepal Floods: 8 Workers From Assam Return, 5 Still Untraced

Eight Assamese workers who were rescued after being stranded in Nepal following devastating floods have returned safely to Assam, while five others from the state remain unaccounted for. The Assam Police brought the rescued workers back after locating them near Bagdogra in North Bengal, close to the Nepal border. The development has provided relief to the families of those who have returned while uncertainty continues for those still missing.

The rescued workers have been identified as Pankaj Barman, Gopal Chand Debnath, Gautam Das, Samar Bezbaruah, Sarvishan Marak, Saneswar Narzary, Silva Marak and Elipson Sangma. Police brought them to Dhubri in Assam on Sunday night, after which they began travelling towards their respective homes on Monday. Officials are continuing efforts to establish the whereabouts of the remaining workers.

A total of 13 workers from different districts of Assam had been employed by a power grid company in Nepal. The five workers who remain unaccounted for are from Nagaon, Nalbari and Karbi Anglong districts. Their families are awaiting information as authorities continue efforts to trace people who were caught in the disaster and were separated from their workplaces or travel groups.

The workers who were rescued reportedly survived by moving towards higher ground in the mountains as floodwaters suddenly surged through the affected area. The water was reported to have risen to nearly 60 feet in some locations, creating extremely dangerous conditions. The workers managed to escape the immediate danger and were later rescued from the Nepal border area before being brought back to India.

The return of the eight workers comes amid a major humanitarian crisis in Nepal, where devastating floods have caused widespread destruction and left large numbers of people missing. Rescue and relief operations are continuing across affected areas as authorities search for survivors and assist people who have been displaced by the flooding.

For the families of the five missing Assamese workers, however, the crisis remains unresolved. Assam authorities and police are continuing efforts to gather information and trace those whose whereabouts are still unknown. The safe return of the eight workers has raised hopes that further survivors may also be located as rescue operations and efforts to establish contact with stranded people continue.
