Nawaz Sharif Says He Wants Shehbaz Sharif to Make Him PoK PM

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said he would like to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan-administered Kashmir if his party wins the upcoming regional elections, stating that he wants to personally oversee the region's development. Addressing an election rally in Muzaffarabad, Sharif, who heads the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), described the region as his "second home" and said his ancestors had migrated from Kashmir. He added that if his party secured victory, he would request Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to appoint him to lead the regional government.
Sharif's remarks come ahead of elections in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, scheduled to be held between July 27 and August 10. The PML-N is contesting against the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), despite both parties being coalition partners in Pakistan's federal government. The election campaign is unfolding against the backdrop of political and economic challenges in the region, with development and governance emerging as key campaign issues.
The region has witnessed sustained protests in recent months, led by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), over issues including inflation, electricity tariffs and alleged government policies. The group had temporarily suspended a planned long march after giving authorities time to address its demands but has since announced a fresh round of demonstrations. Protest organisers have warned that marches towards Muzaffarabad and sit-ins across the region will continue, while local reports have linked the unrest to dozens of fatalities over recent months.

India maintains that the entire Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including areas currently under Pakistan's administration, are integral and inalienable parts of India. New Delhi has consistently stated that Pakistan is in illegal occupation of parts of these territories and has repeatedly objected to elections conducted in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, saying it does not recognise the legislative bodies established there.
