Monsoon Tracker: Satellite Shows Rains Active in North, Moving South Soon

Satellite imagery shows monsoon still active over North, Central India.

The southwest monsoon continues to remain active across large parts of North, Central and East India, with satellite imagery showing widespread cloud cover and continued atmospheric activity across the country. INSAT-3DS observations have captured extensive cloud formations over several regions, indicating that monsoon conditions remain firmly in place despite the season moving into September. Dense cloud bands are visible across parts of the Himalayan region, the Indo-Gangetic plains and central India, while eastern and northeastern areas are also witnessing convective cloud activity and thunderstorms.

The latest satellite images provide a clear indication that the monsoon has retained significant strength over northern and central parts of the country during a period when seasonal rainfall activity usually begins to gradually change. Large areas remain covered by moisture-laden clouds, suggesting the continued influence of monsoon systems. The activity is particularly notable across the Himalayan belt and the plains extending through northern India, where atmospheric conditions continue to support cloud development and rainfall in several locations.

Eastern and northeastern India are also seeing active weather systems, with convective clouds and thunderstorms appearing prominently in satellite observations. Such cloud formations are generally associated with unstable atmospheric conditions and the availability of moisture. Together with the activity over central India, these developments show that the monsoon has not yet fully entered a withdrawal phase across the northern half of the country and continues to influence weather over a broad geographical area.

Forecast models indicate that this pattern may gradually begin to change after the middle of September, particularly across northern parts of India. Monsoon activity over the north is expected to weaken progressively as the seasonal circulation shifts. This does not necessarily mean an immediate end to rainfall, as individual weather systems can continue to produce showers and thunderstorms, but the overall distribution and intensity of rainfall could begin changing as the withdrawal process develops.

As the monsoon weakens over northern areas, rainfall activity is expected to increasingly shift towards southern parts of the country. The transition reflects the seasonal movement of the monsoon circulation and changing atmospheric moisture patterns. While North, Central and East India could continue to experience periods of rain during the transition, southern regions may gradually become more prominent in the overall rainfall pattern. The timing and pace of this shift will depend on how weather systems evolve during the coming weeks.

The INSAT-3DS imagery therefore offers an important snapshot of the monsoon during its late-season phase, showing that significant activity continues across several parts of India even as a gradual transition approaches. The persistence of widespread cloud formations over northern, central and eastern regions suggests that the monsoon still has considerable influence at present. However, forecasts pointing to a gradual easing in the north after mid-September indicate that the country could soon begin moving towards a different rainfall pattern, with activity increasingly concentrated over southern India.
