Michael Bay Bows Out of Will Smith’s ‘Fast and Loose’ After Creative Clash
Hollywood power duo splits before filming starts
Action maestro Michael Bay has officially exited the upcoming Netflix thriller “Fast and Loose”, which stars Will Smith, after reported creative differences with the actor.
Bay—famed for explosive blockbusters like Armageddon, The Rock, Pearl Harbor, and the Transformers franchise—was set to reunite with Smith after their successful collaboration on the Bad Boys series. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the director has stepped away before filming could begin.
The project has already seen directorial turnover. David Leitch (Bullet Train, John Wick) was originally attached before moving on to other commitments. Bay’s departure now leaves Netflix searching for a new filmmaker to helm the high-octane thriller.

Penned by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, Chris Bremner, and Eric Pearson, Fast and Loose follows a man who wakes up in Tijuana with no memory, only to discover he’s been living a double life—one as a ruthless crime lord, the other as an undercover CIA operative.
The film is being produced by Leitch and Kelly McCormick under their 87North banner, alongside Smith. Robert Simonds and Noah Fogelson of STXfilms are on board as executive producers.
Netflix reportedly still plans to begin production in 2026, with the search for Bay’s replacement now underway.
