Mexico vs Washington: Sheinbaum Draws a Line on US Interference After Officials' Indictment

Ten Mexican officials, including a governor, were indicted by the US on drug trafficking charges.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has sharply criticized the United States, accusing it of attempting to interfere in Mexico’s internal affairs following the indictment of ten Mexican officials, including Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, on alleged drug trafficking charges. Speaking at a rally in Mexico City, Sheinbaum described the developments as an unprecedented challenge to the relationship between the two neighboring countries and warned against what she called external pressure on Mexican institutions.

Addressing supporters on Sunday, Sheinbaum claimed that efforts to destabilize her administration had intensified after the deaths of two CIA agents on April 19. According to the Mexican president, the subsequent actions taken by US authorities represented the most serious attempt at intervention in Mexico’s domestic politics in recent years. She questioned whether the indictments reflected a genuine effort to assist Mexico in combating organized crime or were influenced by political interests within the United States ahead of future elections.

The dispute centers on charges brought by the US Department of Justice against ten Mexican officials accused of involvement in drug trafficking activities. Among those named is Rocha Moya, making the case particularly significant because it marks the first time US authorities have sought the arrest and extradition of a sitting elected Mexican governor. The development has become a major point of friction between Sheinbaum’s government and the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico remains committed to cooperating with the United States on security matters and efforts to combat drug trafficking. However, she argued that such cooperation must respect Mexico’s sovereignty and legal institutions. According to the president, allowing foreign authorities to determine the guilt or innocence of Mexican citizens without following domestic legal procedures would cross the line from cooperation into interference.

Mexican officials have maintained that the US Justice Department has not yet provided sufficient evidence to support the accusations against those indicted. In response, Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has opened its own investigation into the matter. Rocha Moya and several of the other accused individuals have already provided testimony to Mexican prosecutors, while two officials from Sinaloa are currently being held in US custody.

During her speech, Sheinbaum urged supporters to challenge what she described as foreign intervention and to engage in public campaigns defending Mexico’s sovereignty. She argued that extradition requests involving elected officials require careful scrutiny and warned that permitting foreign agencies to influence domestic political decisions could undermine democratic governance. The controversy is expected to remain a significant issue in US-Mexico relations as legal proceedings continue in both countries.
