Mamata Banerjee congratulates Tarique Rahman and BNP on their victory in Bangladesh elections.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman following his party’s decisive victory in Bangladesh’s general elections. In a message posted on her official social media handle, Banerjee extended her greetings to the people of Bangladesh and described the outcome as a significant democratic mandate.
Referring to Rahman as “Tarique-Bhai,” the Chief Minister conveyed her best wishes for his leadership and expressed hope that India–Bangladesh relations would remain cordial and constructive. She also greeted the people of Bangladesh ahead of the holy month of Ramazan, highlighting cultural and emotional ties that transcend borders. The elections, conducted on Thursday, were reported to have been held largely peacefully, with results becoming clear on Friday morning.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Rahman, stating that the verdict reflected the confidence of the Bangladeshi people in his leadership. Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh, and expressed his intention to work closely with the new leadership to strengthen bilateral cooperation across sectors.

Within West Bengal’s political landscape, reactions from the state’s opposition were limited at the time of reporting. Senior leaders of the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and state president Samik Bhattacharya, had not issued formal statements. Union Minister of State and former state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar shared the Prime Minister’s congratulatory message, while former state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh expressed optimism about improved India–Bangladesh relations.
The BNP’s victory is expected to have regional implications, particularly for border states such as West Bengal that share deep economic, cultural, and historical connections with Bangladesh. Observers note that the new government’s approach toward trade, connectivity, and cross-border cooperation will be closely watched in New Delhi and Kolkata alike, as both sides seek to maintain stability and mutual growth in the region.
