Keir Starmer Condemns San Diego Mosque Shooting And Highlights Anti-Muslim Hostility

Starmer condemns San Diego mosque shooting, linking attack to rising anti-Muslim hostility concerns.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly condemned a fatal shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, where three people were killed in an attack that has drawn international attention and renewed concerns over hate-motivated violence in the United States. The incident occurred outside the mosque premises and has been described by authorities as a targeted act of violence.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Starmer expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families, while also highlighting the wider impact of such incidents on Muslim communities globally. He said that many Muslims in the United Kingdom would feel “shaken” by the attack and concerned about their safety while attending places of worship or going about their daily lives.

According to US authorities, two juvenile gunmen opened fire outside the Islamic Center of San Diego in the Clairemont district, killing three individuals before later turning their weapons on themselves. The FBI and local law enforcement agencies have launched a detailed investigation into the incident, which is being examined as a potential hate crime given the circumstances and target location.

The attack comes amid a broader pattern of mass shootings in the United States, with data tracking organizations reporting more than 150 such incidents so far this year. The violence has also been contextualised alongside other recent high-profile cases, including shootings targeting state legislators in Minnesota, further intensifying national debate on gun control and public safety.

Starmer also emphasised that violence of this nature does not occur in isolation, stating that it develops in environments where division and hostility towards religious communities can become normalised. He described such conditions as “intolerable” and called for collective action to counter discrimination and prevent further escalation of hate-driven attacks.

The incident has reignited discussions on the safety of religious minorities, particularly Muslim communities in Western countries, and has prompted calls for stronger measures to address extremism and hate crimes. Authorities in the United States continue to investigate the motives behind the attack while community leaders urge calm and unity in the aftermath of the tragedy.
