#JUSTIN: Senior Hezbollah Commander Malek Ballout Killed in Israeli Strike on Beirut Suburbs

Israeli airstrike kills Hezbollah Radwan force commander Malek Ballout in Beirut suburbs.

A senior commander from Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs on Wednesday, marking the first strike on the area in nearly a month amid continuing tensions in the region. According to a source close to Hezbollah, the attack targeted Malek Ballout, identified as the operations commander of the Radwan force. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later confirmed that the military had carried out an operation against what he described as “the commander of Hezbollah’s Radwan force".

The strike reportedly hit the Ghobeiri district in Beirut’s southern suburbs, an area widely regarded as a Hezbollah stronghold. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said Israeli warplanes carried out the attack, causing heavy destruction in the neighbourhood. Visuals from the scene showed buildings reduced to rubble as residents rushed to evacuate with their belongings following the explosion. The southern suburbs have remained highly sensitive since the escalation of conflict earlier this year.

According to reports from Lebanon’s health ministry, at least 11 other people were killed in separate Israeli strikes across southern and eastern Lebanon on the same day. Authorities have not yet released a full breakdown of casualties or confirmed how many civilians were among the dead. The latest attacks represent another major escalation despite an existing truce that reportedly came into effect on April 17 after weeks of cross-border violence between Israel and Hezbollah forces.

The conflict intensified after Hezbollah became directly involved in the wider Middle East war in March, leading to repeated Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and commanders inside Lebanon. Large sections of Beirut’s southern suburbs were heavily affected during earlier phases of the fighting, forcing thousands of residents to flee the area. Many displaced families have not yet returned despite the temporary ceasefire arrangement currently in place.

The Radwan force is considered Hezbollah’s elite military unit and has often been viewed by Israel as one of the group’s most strategically significant divisions. Israeli officials have repeatedly accused the unit of planning cross-border attacks and maintaining advanced military capabilities near the Lebanese-Israeli border. The killing of a senior commander is expected to further heighten tensions between the two sides and raise concerns over possible retaliation or renewed military escalation in the region.

International observers and diplomatic channels have continued to call for restraint amid fears that the conflict could widen further across the Middle East. The latest strike in Beirut has once again highlighted the fragility of the current truce and the persistent instability along Israel’s northern frontier. Lebanese authorities and humanitarian agencies are also facing growing pressure as civilian casualties, displacement and infrastructure damage continue to rise during the prolonged conflict.
