Jaishankar: World Heading Into Messy and Unpredictable Transition
EAM S Jaishankar warns world is entering a messy, unpredictable transitional phase as global order transforms.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday described the global landscape as entering a “messy, risky, and unpredictable” transition phase, signaling a fundamental shift in the established world order. Speaking at the inaugural session of the three-day Global Economic Cooperation Summit (FECC) in Mumbai, he cautioned that old and emerging systems are colliding, creating uncertainty across regions and sectors.
Jaishankar noted that aspects of the current global order will coexist with new frameworks, with economic considerations increasingly intertwined with politics, security, and technological change, particularly in the age of artificial intelligence. He warned that the transition could be prolonged and complex, with potentially destabilizing consequences if nations fail to adapt.
Focusing on India’s approach, Jaishankar emphasized that the country is strengthening domestic capabilities while expanding global engagement. “India’s response is to build national strength, address growth challenges comprehensively, and tackle both short-term issues and long-term prospects. The Reform Express will continue to roll on,” he said, underscoring ongoing policy reforms.

He highlighted India’s ability to leverage internal stability for international influence, citing recent trade deals and enhanced collaboration in production, technology, services, skills, and talent. Jaishankar stressed that India is now engaging international partners from a position of strength, boosting its global relevance amid uncertainty.
The Minister also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategic, people-centric policy approach for enhancing India’s credibility as a global partner. “Our nimble and practical policy choices make India a trusted partner for the world,” he said, highlighting the country’s rising international stature.
Jaishankar attended the summit alongside Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and shared insights on how India is de-risking and diversifying its global interactions while building resilience at home, positioning itself as a stable and strategic actor in a volatile international environment.
