Jaishankar Appreciates Armenia for Safe Evacuation of Indian Nationals From Iran

EAM Jaishankar thanks Armenia for helping evacuate 550+ Indian nationals safely from Iran amid regional conflict.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday expressed gratitude to the government and people of Armenia for helping facilitate the safe evacuation of over 550 Indian nationals from Iran amid escalating conflict in West Asia.

“Thank the Government and the people of Armenia for facilitating the safe evacuation of over 550 Indian nationals from Iran so far. Appreciate their support in these challenging times,” Jaishankar posted on X.

The evacuation comes amid heightened tensions following US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior military officials. In retaliation, Iran launched drone and missile attacks targeting the US, Israel, and allied forces across the region, prompting safety concerns for foreign nationals.

The first batch of evacuees, comprising over 70 Indian students—most from Jammu and Kashmir—along with several pilgrims, landed safely in Delhi on Sunday via a commercial flight. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) confirmed that the students traveled through a long land and air route coordinated with Armenian and Dubai transit points.

Speaking during a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted that India continues to assist its nationals in Iran, which include students, seafarers, businesspeople, professionals, and pilgrims. “We have around 9,000 Indian nationals in Iran… several, especially students, have already returned home. We are also assisting those wishing to travel to Azerbaijan and Armenia to catch commercial flights back to India,” he said.

The Ministry of External Affairs has urged Indian nationals planning to leave Iran to follow the advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran on March 9. Jaiswal added that the embassy remains in constant contact with the community, offering all possible assistance with visas, border crossings, and safe relocation within Iran.
