Bangladesh Restarts Visa Issuance for Indian Nationals Across Categories

Dhaka restores full visa services for Indian applicants.

The High Commission of Bangladesh in New Delhi has resumed visa services for Indian nationals, lifting a partial suspension that had been in place since December, according to reports. The development comes shortly after political changes in Dhaka and signals a possible thaw in bilateral engagement.

The Bangladesh mission reportedly reopened its consular operations on Friday morning for all visa categories, including tourist and medical visas. Earlier, restrictions had primarily affected business and work visa processing, creating uncertainty for travellers and professionals seeking entry into Bangladesh.

The decision follows the recent political transition in Bangladesh, where the Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured victory in the national elections. Party leader Tarique Rahman assumed office as prime minister and has indicated an intent to repair ties with India.

Bangladesh had been governed by an interim administration since August 2024 following the violent ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Diplomatic observers say the restoration of visa services is being viewed as an early confidence-building measure by the new government.

Sources cited in the report noted that the move reflects recognition within the BNP leadership of India’s importance in Bangladesh’s regional strategy and economic planning. The resumption is expected to ease travel and business exchanges between the two neighbouring countries in the coming weeks.
