Israel Warns of Strike on Litani Bridge in Southern Lebanon, Citing Hezbollah Activity

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has issued a warning that it will carry out a strike on another bridge over the Litani River in southern Lebanon, citing alleged militant activity by Hezbollah in the area. The announcement signals a further escalation in tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border amid an already volatile regional security environment.

According to the IDF, the intended target is the Qasmiya Bridge, a key crossing located on the coastal highway north of the Litani River. The military claims that the bridge has been used to facilitate the transfer of operatives and weapons into southern Lebanon, allegedly under the cover of civilian movement. By targeting such infrastructure, Israeli authorities say they aim to disrupt logistical networks and prevent militant build-up near the border.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that he, along with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, had instructed the military to “immediately destroy all the bridges over the Litani River” believed to be linked to militant activities. He said the directive is part of a broader effort to block the southward movement of fighters and weapons, which Israel views as a direct security threat.

Katz also indicated that the military has been directed to intensify operations in villages situated along the line of contact in southern Lebanon. He said these actions are intended to neutralise threats to Israeli communities near the border. In his remarks, Katz referenced previous Israeli military strategies used in locations such as Beit Hanoun and Rafah, where extensive destruction occurred during operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The developments come amid continued cross-border exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, which have contributed to rising tensions in the region. Analysts warn that the targeting of critical infrastructure such as bridges could further escalate the situation, potentially impacting civilian movement and access to essential services in southern Lebanon. Concerns have also been raised about the broader humanitarian implications of such actions.

The Litani River region holds strategic importance, both geographically and militarily, as it lies between key population centres and the Israeli border.
