Israel To Honour Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj With Statue Amid Stronger India Ties
Move reflects strengthening cultural and diplomatic relations with India.
Israel has announced plans to install a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in one of its major cities, describing the initiative as a gesture of cultural respect and friendship that will further strengthen ties between India and Israel. The announcement marks a notable step in cultural diplomacy between the two countries and highlights growing efforts to deepen people-to-people connections alongside their strategic partnership.
The development was announced by Israel's Consul General in Mumbai, Yaniv Revach, following a meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his official residence in Mumbai. The proposed monument will honour the legacy of the Maratha ruler, who is widely revered for his military leadership, administrative vision and commitment to protecting his kingdom.
In a post on social media platform X, Revach drew parallels between the historical experiences of India and Israel, noting that both nations have faced long struggles to defend their homelands, identities and sovereignty. He suggested that the values associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, including courage, resilience and leadership, resonate beyond India and hold significance in a broader global context.

Announcing the project on Shivrajyabhishek Day, which commemorates the coronation of Shivaji Maharaj, Revach said Israeli authorities sought support from the Maharashtra government to ensure that the statue appropriately reflected the stature and legacy of the Maratha king. He thanked Chief Minister Fadnavis for extending immediate cooperation for the initiative.
“On Shivrajyabhishek Day, I am proud to announce that we will be installing a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Israel. To ensure the monument reflects the greatness of the Maharaj, we sought cooperation from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who immediately extended support,” Revach wrote in his post.
The planned installation is expected to serve as a symbol of the expanding relationship between India and Israel, which has witnessed significant growth in recent years across sectors including trade, defence, technology, agriculture and cultural exchange. By commemorating one of India's most celebrated historical figures, Israel aims to reinforce mutual respect and shared values while further strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.
