Israel Accuses Pakistan Of Double Standards At UN Security Council

Israeli envoy cites bin Laden killing to criticize Pakistan’s stance on Hamas.

Israel’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Danny Danon, sharply criticised Pakistan during a UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting, accusing it of double standards in addressing terrorism. The exchange occurred on Thursday during discussions on Israel’s recent attack on Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar, coinciding with the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks orchestrated by Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden. Danon pointedly remarked to Pakistan’s envoy, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, that bin Laden was sheltered and killed in Pakistan in 2011, stating, “The question was, ‘Why was a terrorist given shelter at all?’” There was no immunity for Bin Laden, and there can be no immunity for Hamas.”

Pakistan’s Ahmad condemned Israel’s strike in Qatar as “illegal and unprovoked aggression”, accusing Israel of a pattern of violating international law through military actions in Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and Yemen. He described Israel’s actions as undermining regional peace. In response, Danon referenced the U.S. operation that killed Bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, noting that no nation, including Pakistan, faced condemnation for targeting terrorists. “When you apply different standards to Israel than the standards you apply to yourselves, that is the problem of this institution,” Danon said, urging Pakistan to reflect on its own record before criticising Israel.

Ahmad retorted, calling Israel’s accusations “ludicrous” and accusing it of being a “serial violator” of the UN Charter. He argued that Israel’s remarks were an attempt to deflect from its own violations. Danon countered, emphasising that no nation questioned the U.S. action against bin Laden, highlighting what he described as selective outrage against Israel’s anti-terrorism efforts.

The heated exchange underscores ongoing tensions in the UNSC over differing interpretations of international law and terrorism. The 2011 U.S. operation in Pakistan, which eliminated bin Laden, remains a sensitive point in global diplomacy, with Israel leveraging it to challenge Pakistan’s credibility on the issue.
