IShowSpeed's Distracted Driving Caught Live on Camera Reignites Streamer Safety Debate
IShowSpeed narrowly avoided a crash while checking his phone during a livestream.
Popular YouTube streamer Darren Watkins Jr., widely known as IShowSpeed, is facing backlash after a terrifying near-miss during a livestream went viral on social media. The incident, which occurred on March 28, has reignited concerns over distracted driving, especially among content creators broadcasting live while behind the wheel.
The livestream initially began as a casual indoor session, with Speed and his brother Jamal engaging in light-hearted activities like trying TikTok science experiments, dancing, and snacking. The stream later transitioned into an “in real life” (IRL) format as the group stepped out, with Jamal in the passenger seat and cameraman Slipz filming from the back while Speed drove.
While on the road, Speed was repeatedly seen glancing down at his phone to read live chat messages and interact with viewers. At one point, he asked fans to suggest songs as he sang along, taking his attention off the road for extended moments. The situation quickly turned dangerous when the vehicle ahead suddenly stopped, catching him off guard.

In a split-second reaction, Speed slammed on the brakes, causing everyone in the car to jolt forward. The dramatic moment, captured live on stream, spread rapidly across platforms like YouTube and X, drawing millions of views within hours and sparking widespread debate online.
Immediately after the near-miss, Speed defended himself on stream, saying, “Bro, that’s not my fault,” while expressing confusion over the actions of the driver ahead. He and his brother were then seen putting on their seatbelts, with Speed also reassuring viewers about his driving experience, stating that he had been driving since the age of 16.
This is not the first time the streamer has been involved in risky on-road situations. In September 2025, during a US tour, Speed was part of a stunt attempt alongside YouTuber Westen Champlin, which resulted in a crash after their vehicle hit a light post. The latest incident has once again raised serious questions about safety, responsibility, and the risks of combining livestreaming with driving.
