Baghdad Airstrike Kills Two as Iran-Aligned Militias Threaten U.S. Targets

Iran-backed militias threaten U.S. Embassy after Khamenei strike.

A missile struck a helipad within the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone early Saturday, officials said, underscoring rising threats to American diplomatic facilities amid the widening Iran–U.S. conflict. Iraqi security sources reported smoke rising above the compound after the impact, although there were initially no confirmed casualties.

The strike came amid heightened tensions following a major U.S. and Israeli military campaign against Iran after Tehran’s reported Supreme Leader injuries and strikes on Iranian territory. Armed groups aligned with Iran have threatened renewed attacks on U.S. facilities, and some factions have reportedly offered rewards for information on U.S. diplomatic personnel, intensifying concerns about the security of foreign missions in Iraq.

In addition to the embassy incident, Iraqi authorities said a separate airstrike in Baghdad’s Karrada district struck a residential building early Saturday, killing two civilians and injuring two others. The Iraqi military condemned the attack as a violation of humanitarian principles and international law; details about the responsible party have not been independently confirmed.

The violence in Iraq reflects a broader regional spillover from the ongoing war triggered in late February by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Previously, pro‑Iranian armed factions and militias in Iraq have engaged in rocket, drone, and missile launches against U.S. bases and diplomatic sites, while American forces have conducted retaliatory operations against militia infrastructure.

Iraq’s government has repeatedly expressed its desire to keep the country from becoming a full battlefront, urging respect for Iraqi sovereignty. However, the presence of Iran‑aligned militias and persistent skirmishes near U.S. facilities have made neutrality difficult. Security alerts remain in effect for Baghdad and other regions hosting foreign diplomatic missions and military personnel.

International observers warn the conflict’s escalation risks broader instability, with energy markets, regional security, and diplomatic relations under strain as the U.S. strengthens its military posture in the Gulf and Iran warns of further retaliation. Civilian casualties and infrastructure damage in Iraq and neighbouring countries have contributed to growing humanitarian concerns.
