Iran's President Rejects Rift Speculation, Shares Update On Mojtaba Khamenei Amid Tensions

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that communication with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has become difficult at the moment, amid growing speculation over divisions within Iran's top leadership. However, Pezeshkian defended the country's supreme leader, saying that despite his limited public appearances, Mojtaba Khamenei continues to play an important role in guiding Iran's response during the ongoing conflict with the United States. Speaking about the situation, Pezeshkian said that direct communication with Mojtaba Khamenei had become challenging but described his continued presence as a source of strength for the Iranian leadership.

According to news agency AFP, Pezeshkian said, "It is very difficult to communicate with him at the moment, but in any case, his presence is a very great source of strength for us so that we can continue." Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, took over as Iran's Supreme Leader after the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in a US-Israeli strike that triggered the latest escalation in the Middle East conflict. Since assuming the position, Mojtaba Khamenei has largely remained out of public view, communicating mainly through written statements rather than public appearances.

His absence has fuelled speculation about his relationship with other senior officials in Tehran, particularly as Iran continues to face heightened tensions with the United States. Reports have suggested possible disagreements within Iran's leadership structure, although officials have not publicly acknowledged any internal divisions. Pezeshkian rejected suggestions of a breakdown in relations and sought to reassure the public about the leadership's coordination. The Iranian president said he had held productive meetings with Mojtaba Khamenei and described his interactions with the Supreme Leader as positive. He said he had been met with "kindness and very sound logic" during their discussions.

The Supreme Leader's limited public presence has drawn attention, especially because Iran is currently engaged in a major geopolitical confrontation. Iran's leadership structure gives the Supreme Leader significant authority over key national matters, including defence, foreign policy and strategic decisions. The position holds considerable influence over institutions such as the armed forces and security agencies, making the role of the Supreme Leader central to Iran's response during periods of crisis.

The latest remarks from Pezeshkian come as Iran continues to navigate tensions following the military escalation involving the United States and Israel. The conflict has placed additional pressure on Tehran's leadership, with officials attempting to project unity while managing domestic and international challenges. While Pezeshkian acknowledged difficulties in maintaining direct contact with Mojtaba Khamenei, he emphasised that the Supreme Leader remains an important figure in Iran's decision-making process.
