Iran President Pezeshkian Proposes Regional Security Cooperation With Neighbours

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday expressed Tehran's readiness to establish joint security arrangements with neighbouring countries, calling for greater regional cooperation to prevent conflict and protect territorial integrity. Speaking at the 40th International Conference on Islamic Unity in Tehran, Pezeshkian said Iran was reaching out to neighbouring states based on its experience of war. He also proposed a mutual security and non-aggression treaty among Muslim countries.
Pezeshkian said such an agreement should include commitments by Islamic states to respect one another's territorial integrity and sovereignty. He proposed that countries refrain from allowing their territory, airspace or facilities to be used for attacks against another Muslim state. He also called for countries to avoid supporting actions aimed at destabilising or breaking apart other nations in the region.
The Iranian President further proposed joint mechanisms for managing regional security and urged Muslim countries to establish working groups covering areas beyond security. These groups, he suggested, could promote cooperation in infrastructure, trade, investment and clean energy. His proposals came as the four-day International Conference on Islamic Unity began in Tehran on Thursday and is scheduled to continue until Sunday.

Pezeshkian linked his call for regional security cooperation to Iran's experience of conflict. He argued that the impact of war extends beyond national borders and affects civilians across the region. Referring to the consequences of missiles and bombs, he stressed that regional countries share an interest in preventing further conflict and creating arrangements that can reduce the risk of confrontation.
His remarks also come after comments last week in which Pezeshkian argued that the war between Iran and the United States should eventually come to an end. Speaking at the 31st General Assembly of the Islamic Association of the Iranian Medical Society in Tehran, he described ending the conflict while Iran was in a position of "power and dignity" as preferable. He also referred to international criticism of attacks on Iranian schools, hospitals and infrastructure.
Pezeshkian additionally described a peace memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the United States in June as "honourable and valuable". He maintained that none of its provisions amounted to surrender and argued that the obligations under the agreement rested on the other side. His latest proposal places regional security cooperation among neighbouring Muslim states alongside Iran's broader position on resolving ongoing conflicts.
