Iran Claims 10 Missile Strike On US Military Command Centre In Jordan

Missile strike heightens fears of regional escalation.

Iran claimed on Thursday that it launched 10 ballistic missiles targeting what it described as a US command-and-control centre and the Al-Azraq air base in Jordan, while the Jordanian military said it intercepted eight missiles that entered its airspace. The exchange came amid a second consecutive day of military action between Iran and the United States, raising concerns over a further escalation of regional tensions.

According to a statement issued by Jordan’s armed forces, the country’s air defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed eight missiles launched from Iran toward Jordanian territory. The military said debris from the intercepted missiles fell in some areas but caused no casualties or material damage. It also reaffirmed that Jordan would not allow any violation of its airspace by any party.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the missiles targeted a US command-and-control centre in the Middle East and the Al-Azraq air base in Jordan. The IRGC warned that if the United States carried out further military action against Iran, other US military facilities in the region would also become potential targets. The claims have not been independently verified.

Jordanian government spokesperson Mohammad al-Momani said air raid sirens were activated after missiles launched from Iran entered the country’s airspace and were intercepted. The latest incident follows a similar event on June 11, when Jordan reported intercepting 20 Iranian missiles after Tehran announced strikes in response to US military operations.

The Al-Azraq area hosts a Jordanian air base that has previously been used by US, German, Belgian and French forces during operations against the Islamic State group. Jordan has consistently maintained that it does not host foreign military bases, stating that the presence of allied personnel is limited to cooperation and training arrangements with the Jordanian armed forces.

Jordanian authorities said that since the outbreak of the wider Middle East conflict on February 28, the country has detected 281 missiles and drones launched from Iran toward or across its territory, with 261 reportedly intercepted. Officials said 30 people had been injured in earlier attacks, all of whom have since been discharged from hospital, while the latest exchange has renewed concerns over the risk of a broader regional conflict.
