Iran Announces Major Gas Discovery In Southern Fars Province, 5.7 Trillion Cubic Feet Recoverable

Iran has announced the discovery of more than 212 billion cubic metres of natural gas reserves in the southern province of Fars, with authorities estimating that over 160 billion cubic metres could be commercially extracted. Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad announced the discovery on state television on Sunday and said urgent steps were being taken to begin development of the field.
Paknejad described the newly discovered resource as "sweet" natural gas, meaning it contains very low levels of hydrogen sulphide. Gas with lower hydrogen sulphide content can require fewer treatment processes, potentially reducing the costs associated with developing and operating a field.
The Petroleum Minister said the discovery could provide an important boost to Iran's energy sector and described it as a strong foundation for the country's energy future. Authorities are now expected to focus on development plans aimed at bringing the recoverable reserves into production as quickly as possible.

The announcement comes as Iran's energy industry faces significant pressure from international sanctions and disruptions to infrastructure. The source report also noted the impact of months of US-Israeli strikes on Iranian infrastructure, adding to challenges faced by the country's oil and gas sector.
The gas discovery was announced amid escalating economic tensions between Iran and the United States. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned on social media that if what he described as an economic war continued, Iran could halt oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz and elsewhere in the Persian Gulf. He also warned countries supporting US economic measures against Iran.
The remarks followed US President Donald Trump's announcement of a major economic operation against countries providing support to Iran. The developments also come after a June 18 memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran concerning an end to the regional conflict, including Lebanon. The two sides were expected to hold negotiations within 60 days, but the status of those talks remains uncertain amid renewed tensions between the countries.
