India-Pakistan Dynamics Separate From US-Iran Peace Efforts, Says Secretary Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserts India accepts Pakistan's mediation in a US-Iran ceasefire while acknowledging New Delhi's terrorism concerns remain separate.

New Delhi hosted US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his four-day official visit to India, where he addressed questions regarding Pakistan’s role as a mediator between the United States and Iran. Rubio stated that India has not raised any objections to Islamabad’s involvement in facilitating the ceasefire and ongoing peace efforts. He acknowledged that India remains concerned about terrorist groups operating from Pakistani territory but clarified that New Delhi’s issues with Pakistan are distinct from its mediation efforts in the US-Iran conflict. Rubio made these remarks while speaking to reporters before departing for other engagements, including the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

Rubio emphasised the strength of the India-US strategic partnership during his visit, describing India as one of America’s most important allies and a leading trade partner. He dismissed perceptions of any slowdown in bilateral ties and expressed confidence that the relationship would reach new heights by the end of the current US administration. The Secretary of State held bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. His itinerary also includes visits to Agra to see the Taj Mahal and Jaipur before returning to the capital for the Quad discussions focused on Indo-Pacific cooperation.

On Pakistan’s mediation role, Rubio noted that Islamabad had played a key part in brokering a US-Iran ceasefire that has held for six weeks. Pakistan’s army chief recently visited Tehran as efforts for a broader agreement continue. US President Donald Trump had earlier acknowledged doing the ceasefire as a favour to Pakistan, praising its leadership. Rubio sidestepped questions about India’s concerns over renewed US engagement with Pakistan’s military, stating that responsible nations maintain relations with multiple countries without undermining key partnerships.

The US Secretary of State reaffirmed strong US support for India, with President Trump publicly declaring that India can count on him 100 per cent. Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a great friend during an event marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The remarks came amid growing diplomatic engagements between the two democracies. Rubio’s visit is seen as an effort to further consolidate bilateral ties across defence, trade, and technology sectors.

India has consistently highlighted cross-border terrorism as a major concern in its relationship with Pakistan. However, according to Rubio, these issues did not come up in discussions regarding Pakistan’s mediator role in the Iran situation. The US continues to balance its strategic interests in South Asia while maintaining its deep partnership with India. Observers view Rubio’s comments as an attempt to reassure New Delhi about the nature of US-Pakistan tactical engagements.

The Quad foreign ministers’ meeting on Tuesday is expected to deliberate on regional stability, maritime security, and economic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. Rubio’s visit comes at a time of evolving global geopolitics, with the US seeking to strengthen alliances in the face of multiple international challenges. The discussions in New Delhi are likely to reinforce the shared commitment between India and the United States towards a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
