IMD Issues Heatwave Alert Across Northwest India for Next 4-5 Days

IMD issues heatwave alert with red warning for Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

New Delhi is experiencing intense heatwave conditions as the India Meteorological Department has warned that severe heat will persist across large parts of northwest India for the next four to five days. The IMD has issued a red alert for Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, indicating extreme heat danger, while placing Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan under a yellow alert. These warnings come amid soaring temperatures that have raised public health concerns, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers. Authorities have urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The continuation of heatwave conditions is expected to affect daily life and economic activities in the region with maximum temperatures likely to remain significantly above normal. Meteorologists have noted that the absence of significant rainfall in the plains has contributed to the prolonged hot spell. In urban centres like Delhi, the combination of high temperatures and humidity has made conditions feel even more oppressive. The IMD has advised people to monitor official updates closely as the situation evolves over the coming days.

A western disturbance currently centred over Jammu and Kashmir is expected to bring some relief in the form of thunderstorm activity in the hilly regions. Meteorologist Akhil Srivastava highlighted that this weather system will likely trigger thunderstorms particularly across Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Such developments could lead to temporary cooling and gusty winds in higher altitudes while the plains continue to face dry and hot conditions.

There is also a possibility of hailstorms at a few isolated places in Jammu, according to the IMD. In view of this potential hazard, an orange alert has been issued for Jammu and Kashmir to warn residents and authorities about possible damage to crops, property, and infrastructure. The forecast indicates that while the western disturbance may bring localized weather changes in the hills, the overall heatwave pattern in northwest India is likely to remain dominant in the immediate future.

The IMD has been actively monitoring the evolving weather patterns and issuing timely advisories to state administrations. Public health departments in the affected states have stepped up preparations, including setting up heatstroke treatment facilities and conducting awareness campaigns. Farmers and agricultural workers have been advised to reschedule outdoor activities and ensure adequate protection for livestock during the peak heat hours.

This latest heatwave alert underscores the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in India linked to changing climate patterns. As temperatures climb, experts continue to emphasize the importance of community-level preparedness and sustainable practices to mitigate long-term impacts. Residents across the northwest region are encouraged to follow safety guidelines and stay informed through official channels as the IMD keeps a close watch on further developments.
