Hyderabad Police Arrest Former UP Drug Peddler In Alleged Illegal Firearms Trading Case

Hyderabad police have arrested a 27-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh for allegedly attempting to sell illegal firearms in the city. The arrest was made during a joint operation by the Malkajgiri Zone Special Operations Team (SOT) and Bollaram Law and Order police. Officers seized two 9mm pistols, three magazines and 19 live rounds from the accused, according to police. The accused was identified as Prabhas Kumar, a native of Uttar Pradesh who was residing in Bihar Basti in Patancheru and working as a daily-wage labourer. Police said they arrested him while investigating an alleged attempt to sell an illegal weapon.

The recovery of two pistols along with magazines and live ammunition has led investigators to examine the source of the firearms and the circumstances in which Kumar allegedly acquired them. The operation was conducted by personnel from the Malkajgiri Zone SOT and Bollaram Law and Order police as part of efforts to curb the illegal circulation of firearms in the area. The seizure included 19 live rounds in addition to the two 9mm pistols and three magazines. Police are expected to investigate whether the weapons were intended for sale to another person and whether Kumar was acting alone or as part of a wider network involved in the illegal supply of firearms.

According to police, Kumar has a previous criminal record involving drug peddling. He was arrested by Cherlapally police in 2024 in connection with a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. His previous involvement in the drug trade has now become part of the investigation into the alleged firearms-related activity, although the circumstances linking the two cases have not been detailed by authorities. Kumar's employment history has also included work outside the city. Recent reports stated that he had previously worked as an agricultural labourer and a lorry cleaner before working as a daily-wage labourer in Patancheru.

Police are examining his background as part of the investigation while seeking to establish how he came into possession of the weapons and ammunition recovered during the operation. The recovery of illegal firearms and live ammunition has prompted further investigation into the alleged intended sale. Authorities will need to establish the source of the pistols, identify any potential buyers and determine whether other people were involved in transporting or supplying the weapons. Such investigations can also help police determine whether the seized firearms were part of a larger illegal arms network operating in or around Hyderabad.

The arrest comes as law enforcement agencies continue to monitor the illegal movement of weapons and ammunition in the region.
