Hindu Community Leader Abducted, Brutally Killed in Bangladesh’s Dinajpur
In a shocking act of violence against Bangladesh’s Hindu minority, Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a 58-year-old prominent Hindu leader and vice-president of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, was abducted from his home in Basudebpur village, Dinajpur’s Biral upazila, and brutally beaten to death on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
Local police and family members confirmed the incident, which has heightened concerns about the safety of minorities in the country.
According to Roy’s wife, Shantana Roy, four men on two motorcycles arrived at their residence around noon and forcibly took Bhabesh. Witnesses reported seeing the assailants transport him to Narabari village, where he was subjected to a severe assault.

Approximately 30 minutes later, the attackers returned Roy to his home in an unconscious state. Family members rushed him to a Dinajpur hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and police are investigating, with no arrests reported as of Friday evening.
This incident follows a surge in violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, with a Dhaka-based human rights group, Ain O Salish Kendra, documenting 147 incidents of vandalism targeting Hindu homes, temples, and businesses in the past month alone. The unrest has intensified since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus assumed power in August 2024, amid protests and political upheaval.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs dismissed Bangladesh’s claims of isolated incidents, urging Dhaka to prioritize minority safety.
