Hezbollah Uses Wired Fibre-Optic Drones That Evade Israeli Electronic Warfare Systems

Hezbollah uses fibre-optic drones that bypass Israeli jamming, increasing battlefield risks in Lebanon conflict zone.

A new escalation in drone warfare is emerging in the Israel–Lebanon conflict, with Hezbollah reportedly deploying fibre-optic controlled quadcopter drones that are proving difficult for Israeli defence systems to detect or neutralise. The development comes amid heightened cross-border hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel, following months of intensified military exchanges.

According to multiple defence assessments cited in reports, the group has begun using small drones equipped with explosives that are guided through fibre-optic cables rather than conventional wireless signals. This method allows the drones to avoid radio-frequency detection and makes them largely immune to Israel’s electronic jamming systems, which have historically been a key part of its air defence strategy. Military experts note that the absence of a radio signal also makes it difficult to trace the launch location.

The drones are reportedly light, inexpensive, and capable of carrying small explosive payloads such as grenades. Analysts suggest that the base drone platforms may be sourced from China or Iran, after which explosive devices are attached locally. Their design allows operators to control them via a thin fibre cable that can extend up to 15 kilometres, providing real-time visual feedback while keeping operators safely out of range.

The technology itself is not entirely new. Similar fibre-optic drone systems were previously observed in the Ukraine conflict, where they were used extensively in battlefield operations. Their effectiveness in avoiding electronic interference led to further refinements, which have now reportedly been adopted and adapted in the Middle East theatre. The system’s simplicity and low cost make it particularly challenging to counter at scale.

Recent reports indicate that such drones have already been used in strikes targeting Israeli military positions near the northern border. In one such incident, Israeli forces reported casualties, including a young soldier, while additional drones were reportedly deployed against evacuation efforts. These developments highlight the growing tactical challenge posed by unmanned systems in modern asymmetric warfare.

In response, Israel is reportedly experimenting with physical countermeasures such as nets and barriers to intercept incoming drones, along with enhanced surveillance and intelligence efforts. However, defence officials acknowledge that the threat remains difficult to fully mitigate, with military sources describing it as an evolving challenge that continues to require rapid adaptation on the battlefield.
