Zelensky Says Ukraine Downed Shahed Drones In Middle East During Iran War
Zelensky says Ukraine downed Iranian-designed Shahed drones in the Middle East during Iran war operations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that Ukrainian military personnel were involved in shooting down Iranian-designed Shahed drones in several Middle Eastern countries during the recent Iran conflict, marking a rare public acknowledgment of Kyiv’s overseas defensive operations.
In remarks made to reporters on Wednesday and later released on Friday under embargo, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the operations were part of Ukraine’s broader effort to support international partners in countering drone threats. The Shahed drones, originally designed in Iran, have also been widely used by Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian forces participated in active defensive operations abroad, using domestically produced interceptor drones that have been tested in battlefield conditions. He did not specify the exact locations in the Middle East where the interceptions took place, but said the deployments were aimed at helping allied countries respond to similar aerial threats.

The announcement highlights the expanding international dimension of drone warfare, as countries increasingly rely on unmanned systems for both offensive and defensive operations. Ukraine has developed significant expertise in counter-drone technology since the start of the war with Russia, where Iranian-made Shahed drones have played a major role in long-range strike campaigns.
Military analysts note that Ukraine’s involvement in intercepting Shahed drones abroad underscores its growing role as both a user and exporter of modern drone warfare tactics. The move also reflects deepening security cooperation between Ukraine and partner nations facing similar aerial threats in volatile regions.
The development adds another layer to the ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran, Russia, and their use of drone technology in modern conflicts, further blurring the lines between regional and global security theaters.
