Global Leaders Gather As Marco Rubio Leads Talks On Far-Left Political Terrorism
Rubio leads global talks on far-left political terrorism.
The United States is set to host an international ministerial conference on Thursday to discuss what it describes as the resurgence of "far-left political terrorism" and ways to strengthen global cooperation against the evolving security threat. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will chair the meeting, which will bring together representatives from countries across the Western Hemisphere, Europe and Asia to coordinate efforts against transnational extremist violence. India is unlikely to participate in the conference.
According to the US Department of State, the meeting aims to deepen collaboration among partner nations to better identify violent extremist networks, disrupt terrorist financing, safeguard critical infrastructure and improve intelligence-sharing. The department said the conference would focus on enhancing collective action against what it called a threat that transcends national borders. Officials also intend to discuss strengthening law enforcement cooperation and sharing best practices to respond to ideologically motivated violence.
In a statement issued ahead of the conference, the State Department said far-left political terrorism has witnessed a resurgence in recent years, with violent incidents reported across the Western Hemisphere, Europe, Asia and other regions. It alleged that such attacks are part of a deliberate strategy aimed at destabilising democratic societies by targeting political institutions, economic systems, law enforcement personnel, government officials, businesses, private citizens and critical infrastructure. The department argued that the international community has historically underestimated this category of terrorism despite the risks it poses.

The conference follows a series of measures announced by the United States over the past year. Since November 2025, Washington has designated four organisations—Antifa Ost, the Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front (FAI/FRI), Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defence—as Foreign Terrorist Organisations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists. The US government has also announced rewards of up to USD 10 million for information leading to the disruption of the financial networks supporting these groups, as part of a broader strategy to weaken their operational capabilities.
The State Department said the ministerial builds on earlier international engagement, including the inaugural Counterterrorism Law Enforcement Workshop held in May 2026. The two-day event brought together officials from 14 countries to exchange operational experience and discuss legal and investigative approaches to combating transnational extremist organisations. According to US officials, lessons from that workshop will help shape discussions at the ministerial and strengthen future international coordination.
The conference is expected to focus on expanding information-sharing mechanisms, improving cross-border investigations and reinforcing international law enforcement partnerships to counter extremist violence. While the United States has positioned itself as taking a leading role in addressing what it terms far-left political terrorism, the initiative is likely to attract international attention and debate over definitions, legal frameworks and approaches to counterterrorism. The outcomes of the meeting could influence future cooperation among participating nations in responding to evolving global security challenges.
