French Authorities Rescue 38 Migrants, Four Dead During English Channel Attempt

Four migrants die as 38 rescued during Channel crossing attempt.

At least four people, including two men and two women, died on Thursday while attempting to cross the English Channel from northern France to the United Kingdom. French authorities said 38 others were rescued during the operation, including one individual requiring urgent medical attention, as rescue teams continued their efforts on Equihen Beach.

The prefect of Pas-de-Calais, François-Xavier Lauch, explained that the victims were swept away by strong currents while trying to board a “taxi-boat.” Authorities use this term for small motorized inflatable boats operated by traffickers, which pick up migrants from secluded points along the northern French coastline. These boats have become more common as stricter policing makes direct beach departures riskier.

Thursday’s incident occurred along a broad stretch of sand backed by dunes and forest, areas where migrants often hide for days while awaiting suitable weather and sea conditions. Local police patrol on buggies and monitor from remnants of World War II-era bunkers, but the long coastline makes it impossible to prevent all departures.

Recent days have seen a surge in attempted crossings and fatalities. French maritime authorities reported that 102 people were rescued in two separate operations on Wednesday, while two people died in a similar incident off the coast north of Calais last week. Migrants typically wade into the water, sometimes carrying children, before climbing onto waiting inflatable boats for the cross-Channel journey. The distance from shore, tides, and currents increase the risk of accidents.

Human rights groups warn that intensified policing, including puncturing inflatable boats to prevent departures, has inadvertently increased the use of taxi-boats, which are riskier and more prone to accidents. Campaigners stress that these conditions heighten the likelihood of drownings, injuries, and emergency rescues.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges facing French authorities and humanitarian organizations as migrants continue to attempt the perilous Channel crossing despite increased security and public awareness of the dangers involved.
