PM Modi References Mamata Banerjee’s 2021 Nandigram Loss Ahead Of Bengal Polls

PM Modi warns Mamata’s 2021 Nandigram loss could repeat in Bengal elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently referenced Mamata Banerjee’s defeat in the 2021 Nandigram assembly election, suggesting that similar outcomes could be repeated across Bengal in upcoming polls.Speaking at a public rally, Modi remarked on the political shift in Nandigram, highlighting it as a case where the electorate expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership. “The people of Bengal made their choice in Nandigram in 2021, and the same sentiment is likely to be seen across other constituencies,” he stated, signalling confidence in his party’s prospects ahead of the state elections.

Modi’s comments come amid intensifying political campaigns in West Bengal, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been positioning itself as a viable alternative to the TMC. Analysts note that references to past electoral outcomes, particularly high-profile defeats like Nandigram, are being used to galvanize supporters and create momentum for the party.

During the rally, Modi also emphasised development narratives and governance achievements, contrasting them with what he described as the TMC’s failures in addressing local issues. His remarks linked the Nandigram outcome to broader calls for accountability and change, framing it as a warning for incumbent leaders across the state.

Political observers suggest that invoking past election results is a strategic move aimed at consolidating the BJP’s base, while sending a psychological signal to undecided voters. The Nandigram contest in 2021 had been widely covered, with Banerjee’s defeat there considered a symbolic victory for the BJP, even though the TMC retained overall control in the assembly.

As campaigning intensifies, statements like Modi’s are likely to dominate political discourse, with parties closely monitoring voter sentiment and using past elections as reference points to shape narratives. The upcoming polls in Bengal are expected to be closely contested, with both national and state-level leaders deploying historical outcomes to influence public perception.
